Sony Online Entertainment sold and becomes Daybreak Game Company

SOE_onlyInvestment firm Columbus Nova has completed its acquisition of Sony Online Entertainment today. This comes as a surprise to many, given that there was no sign that SOE was even on the market. The sale effectively makes SOE an independent entity, meaning it will now operate under the banner Daybreak Game Company.

The now-former Sony Online Entertainment is best recognized for its online MMO presence. Credits include the EverQuest series, DC Universe Online, and PlanetSide 2. Games that were set to release in the future under the SOE umbrella included EverQuest Next and H1Z1. Development schedules are not slated to be affected in any way.

“We are excited to join Columbus Nova’s impressive roster of companies. They have a proven track record in similar and related industries and we are eager to move forward to see how we can push the boundaries of online gaming,” said John Smedley, now President of Daybreak Game Company, via the issued press release. “We will continue to focus on delivering exceptional games to players around the world, as well as bringing our portfolio to new platforms, fully embracing the multi-platform world in which we all live.”

Specific terms of the sale, including the final sale amount, were not disclosed.
