Sony has scheduled PlayStation Network maintenance for January 15.
In Europe, the maintenance period will run from 5pm until 9pm GMT this Thursday.
Sony’s European arm says the following services will be unavailable during the network downtime:
- PlayStation Store on all devices
- PlayStation Network Account Management
- PlayStation Network Account Registration
- Entertainment services
- Online gameplay – however, you may still play online if you are already signed into your SEN account via the relevant device before the maintenance begins
In North America, where PSN will be offline from 9am to 1pm Pacific Time (12pm to 4pm Eastern Time), the maintenance period will be slightly less disruptive.
Sony’s US arm says: “The restriction to log in a few days before the maintenance has been lifted. As long as you have an active account with PSN as of the start of maintenance, you will be able to play online and access partner services such as Netflix while the maintenance is occurring. This is for PS4, PS3, and Vita platforms.”
The maintenance period will be used to “deploy a series of back-end improvements to the network”.
Hacking group Lizard Squad claimed responsibility for distributed denial of service attacks on both PlayStation Network and Xbox Live over the Christmas period, which left console owners unable to play online or create new user accounts.
To make up for the service outage, PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive a five day membership extension, while all PSN users will be offered a limited time discount code for a digital purchase in January.
