Amazon in talks over purchase of Twitch

Online retailers Amazon is reportedly in “late-stage talks” to acquire video game streaming service Twitch, according to The Information, and may be nearing a deal.

News of Amazon swooping in to buy Twitch comes after multiple reports that indicated Google-owned YouTube was looking to buy the streaming service for $1 billion.

According to The Information’s report citing sources, a deal between Twitch and Amazon remains unclear but that an announcement could be made “shortly.” Polygon has reached out to Twitch and Amazon for comment.

Twitch was launched in June 2011 by co-founders Justin Kan and Emmett Shear and focuses on live video game streams and eSports broadcasting. Twitch boasts more than 55 million visitors per month and topped 1 million monthly broadcasters earlier this year.
