Sony sells 5.3 million PS4 units globally

Sony had previously said that it hoped to sell 5 million consoles by the end of March, a month after it had been released in Japan.

Instead, the target has already been reached with the PS4 due for Japanese release on February 22.

Current Xbox One sales are not yet known, although last monthMicrosoft claimed 3 million consoles had been sold by the end of 2013. Sony claimed to have sold 4.2 million PS4s in the same period.

SCE president Andrew House said in a statement that he was “thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season.”

He added: “We are delighted that according to the NPD Group’s latest data, PS4 was January’s top-selling console in the United States. The PS4 system’s momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans.

“February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I’m looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4.”

According to Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter, worldwide PS4 saleswill reach 37.7 million units by the end of 2016.

During the same period, Pachter expects Xbox One sales to total 29 million units.

Having launched in November 2012, global Wii U sales totalled 3.91 million units as of September 30, 2013.
